Networking

One 0f the most important aspects of college is networking and making connections with individuals that can not only help you with your career but make friendships that will last for years.  Transfer students (myself included) are at a disadvantage in networking and making connections, because of the little time we will spend at UTA.  But these connections are important and I have a couple of tips to help you network.

Join an organization: This is a common tip for success in college but it is useful.  When you join a student organization or club you will create relationships with the members.  Also, you will create a relationship with the faculty mentor.  With this relationship faculty mentors are more than happy to give you advice about your career and write letters of recommendations.  In my experience faculty mentors are more than willing to write letters of recommendations for me. There are many organizations on campus and I am sure there is one organization that will meet your interest. The website mavorgs (you can search for it on the UTA home page) has a list of all the organizations on campus.

Get an on campus job: Another way I have made connections is through my on campus job(s).  I have two jobs on campus and have worked for the university for more than a year now.  Today, I am comfortable enough with them that I know I can ask and (have asked) for letters of recommendation.  In order to find and apply for jobs on campus you will have to log in to snapjobs.

Forge a relationship with Professors: This maybe the most important way to network in college.  Your professors will not only help you with letters of recommendation but they can also help you find you jobs, internships, and can help you improve your resume.  The way I have created relationships is being an active student in class.  I ask questions (sometimes after class), talk about the assignment, and visit them during their office hours for help.  When the professor sees that you will care they will help you in the future.  Also, some students have this fear of talking to professors (I know I sure did) and I am here to tell you it is unwarranted.  Most professors (all professors from my experience) want to help you succeed.  So they will not only help you with your class work but also your future.

Transfer Orientation

So you plan on going to UTA next semester… Well did you know that you have to attend orientation in order to register for classes?

Well don’t worry, orientation is a fun and great opportunity for you.  During orientation you can talk to different departments and ask questions that you might have.  For instance, you can have a session with financial aid and ask questions.  Another example, is that there will be several informational sessions  from departments like Honors College or Campus Recreation. At these information sessions you can learn about what different departments offer and you can ask questions.

Also during orientation there is a student life Involvement Fair. Many of the student organizations and some academic departments will have tables and representatives present.  Fraternities,  sororities, EXCEL, the library, UTA volunteers, and other organizations will be present at the fair.  This is a great opportunity for students to be informed about what organizations do around campus.  Every student should walk around the fair and talk to a couple organizations, it will definitely help you get more involved around campus.

Involvement Fair Pro Tip: Go up to the organizations, do not wait for them to come to you. If you see an organization you find interesting go and talk to them. Many of the representatives of organizations do not want to pester people who are not interested in their organization (trust me, I do these fairs and it is as awkward for the representatives…also stop by the Maverick Transfer Connection table). So they will be hesitant to talk to you if you are just walking by.

Involvement Fair Pro Tip 2: See me!! The Maverick Transfer Connection will have a table present at the Involvement Fair.  Be sure to drop by and learn more about our program and ask any questions you might have.

Before Orientation

See your advisor: Before you come to orientation you should be advised with the appropriate advisor. If you have more than 30 hours transferring in, you should see your major advisor.  However, if  you have less than 30 hours or are undecided you will be advised in the University Advising Center in Ransom Hall (where the Maverick Transfer Connection is located…if you were wondering).  Getting advised before orientation allows the student to have the academic hold removed so they can register for classes right after orientation.

Think of questions: Of course you will have questions about transferring to UTA.  And if you haven’t been able to contact us and ask your question, Orientation is a great opportunity to ask.  Not only will you be able to ask your questions to fellow students during orientation, you can also ask some staff members during some of the sessions I mentioned earlier.

Schedule your Orientation: Of course before attending orientation you will have to schedule orientation.  Click here to see the dates for orientation. In order to register for orientation either click the link at the bottom of the orientation date page or click right here.  After going to that page you will have to click the bottom “sign in to register” in order to actually register.  Keep in mind, you will not have to pay the orientation fee when you register.  The payment will go to your MyMav account and you can pay it on MyMav.

Transferring to UTA?

So you have been accepted to UTA, but what next?  Transferring to a new University is stressful.  You are not sure about what you need to do and you are stressing out because it feels like you have a limited time to register for classes.

I get  it…I’ve been there.  As a transfer student I’ve had those same emotions of stress and confusion.  Hopefully this article will help you with your stress level, and make you feel more at home.22995420435_7c1f5015e8_b

Meningitis Hold: There are three holds on your account that will limit you in registering for classes.  In order to release the meningitis hold, you will have to show that you have had a meningitis vaccination.  In order to give your vaccination record you will have to do this online through your UTA email.  So be sure to set up your UTA email in order to take care of this hold.  Here is some more information on the meningitis requirement.

Orientation Hold:  Another hold you will have is the Orientation hold.  In order to release this hold, you will need to attend a transfer orientation.  Here are the dates for this orientation season and you can register here.   The orientation does cost $65 but you do not have to pay the fee right then.  The fee will be added to your mymav account.

If you are student who works fulltime and is over the age of 25 be sure to check out our Express Transfer orientation.  Here are the dates and qualifications.  This orientation is less than half of the day and is designed for working individuals with a less flexible schedule.

Academic Advisor Hold: The final hold will be an academic advising hold.  A student must be advised every semester in order to confirm  that the student is on the right track to graduate.  So you will have to see an advisor every semester till you graduate.

If you have under 30 hours of credits transferring into UTA, you will be advised in the University Advising Center.  Over the summer the UAC only offers walk in advising.  However, throughout the semester you will always have to make an appointment to see an advisor in the UAC.  You can make an appointment online.  The UAC is in Ransom Hall (depicted below).9525816586_c47b31e5f5_b

If you have over 30 hours of credits transferring to UTA, you will advise with your major department advisor.  To find out who your advisor is just search your department on the UTA homepage’s search bar.  When you find your department website there will be a link that should say undergraduate advisors. This will take  you to their page and  from there you can email or schedule an appointment.  In my experience, most advisors have students make appointments in order to  be advised, however  some advisors have walk in hours.  This  depends on the advisor.  It is also good to call the department to ask any questions.

Those are the three main holds I remember from my transition and in my help with other students.  However, here are some other resources that might help you with that transition to here.

Dan Dipert Welcome Center:  If you would like to see more of campus on a guided tour, contact the Dan Dipert Welcome Center.  They can give you a tour that will show you all around campus.  They also have other tours like housing.  You can reach them by calling 817-272-8687 (TOUR) or going to their website. This is a great option to see the campus if you have some free time.  If not, they do offer tours during orientation.

SNAP jobs: If you are one of those people who are interested in getting an on campus job as soon as possible this is the website for you.  All of the on campus jobs are listed on this website.  You have to set up an account, upload a resume, and apply for the job.  But it is all pretty simple if you follow the instructions provided on the website. University Housing:  There are a variety of places to live around campus, this is the resource for students who would like to live on campus.  You can go to this website, you can chat online, or visit them in their office in the University Hall.

Finding Balance

Let me first start by saying I am not your balance expert; only you should be your own balance expert. I do however have a few things going for myself that have helped me not only get through “life” but at times thrive in life.  Keep in mind as you read the following tips, “life” is fluid; it constantly changes, introduces new people, new ideas, and new situations. Compare life to water…have you ever been taken under an ocean wave? The weight of the water can spin you crazy, cause you to panic, completely disorient you; kinda scary to say the least. But in other situations, like swimming in a pool or dipping your feet into a running stream, the water can be very calming and fun.  Welcome to LIFE!

Depending on your mood, what you got going on, who’s around to support you it can easily become unmanageable. So step #1… understand that your balance needs to change during different times in your life. Re-assessment of what you need should be done regularly. That may mean once a semester, once a month, once a week or even every day. Ask yourself, what is in my power to make today positive and proactive? So here are a few things I do to help me find my balance.

  1. Keep an organized calendar

Since I am trying to save the earth, I like to keep my calendar updated in my phone. It’s the easiest way for me to know what’s coming up and plan my days ahead of time. Also, writing things down helps clear my mind. I know that I can essentially forget about things once they have been listed on my calendar and I’ll get a reminder a few days or hours before something is due.

  1. Check in socially

I’ve learned the hard way, no one makes it on their own. We all need help along the way and unless you make an effort to be available to others, you may be lacking in social support.  Send an email, go to lunch, have a 10 min. convo on the phone with your best pal to show them you care. I tend to put this in terms of karma…what you give is what you get!

  1. Put yourself first!

Ask yourself what makes you happy and start implementing it. I need alone time, otherwise my inner mean girl comes out and she’s ugly! L Learning about yourself and not being afraid to change, is what growing up is all about. But figuring stuff out takes time. So be patient and try new stuff, you make like that spinning class after all.

Summer Time!

It is finally here!! And I’m not talking about Captain America: Civil War, I am talking about summer time!!

No more classes to stress about, no more papers to write, and no more tests to study for! frabz-Me-walking-out-of-class-After-finishing-my-last-final-of-the-sem-feae38…Unless you are taking summer classes, but I digress.

I know what I will be doing for this summer.  I will continue to tell myself to “train” for that Tough Mudder I keep telling my self I will be running.  Also, I will be working this summer!! Now I will be working a couple of odd jobs this summer, but mostly I will be working for you!!!

I will be at some Transfer Orientations for all of you new Mavericks out there!! I will also be maintaining my office hours for any one who would like to ask some questions about transition into UTA.
